Canada Closes Iran Embassy, Expels Diplomats

Updated

In a protest against alleged Iranian military aid to Syria, Canada's Foreign Ministry says it has closed its embassy in Tehran and declared all remaining Iranian diplomats in Canada personae non gratae.

In a statement, the ministry said it made the move because the "Iranian regime is providing increasing military assistance" to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The ministry also said Iran "refuses to comply with UN resolutions pertaining to its nuclear program, routinely threatens the existence of Israel," and "is among the world's worst violators of human rights."

The statement says Iranian diplomats have five days to leave Canada.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman accused the Canadian government of being "under the influence of the Zionist regime," of Israel.

The spokesman added Iran will give an "adequate reply" to Canada's move.
