A group of Chinese writers has accused Apple Inc.'s online store of selling pirated copies of their books, and is demanding millions of dollars in compensation from the U.S.-based consumer electronics and personal computing giant.

Apple is accused of selling unlicensed copies of dozens of books by the Chinese writers, and lawsuits on behalf of the writers have been filed with a Beijing court.

Carolyn Wu, a Beijing-based Apple spokesman, said the company respects intellectual property rights but declined to address the details of the Chinese writers' claim.
