Jailed Kazakh Tycoon's Father-In-Law Attacked In Kyrgyzstan

The father-in-law of the jailed former chief of Kazakhstan’s national nuclear company, KazAtomProm, has been stabbed in an attack in his native Kyrgyzstan.

Kyrgyz Health Ministry officials told RFE/RL that Raikan Alkanov, 79, was attacked by unknown assailants at his home in the northern Kyrgyz city of Talas over the weekend.

Alkanov was stabbed at least 15 times.

He remains in a hospital emergency room in a serious but stable condition.

Alkanov's son-in-law Mukhtar Dzhakishev is a tycoon and former KazAtomProm president who was arrested in 2009.

Dzhakishev is serving a 14-year prison sentence on a corruption conviction he and his supporters say was politically motivated.

KazAtomProm is Kazakhstan’s main producer of uranium and provider of nuclear-fuel-cycle services.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
