Egypt Confirms That 10 Barred From Presidential Vote

Egypt's electoral commission has upheld a decision to ban 10 candidates from running for president in next month's election -- the first presidential poll after the ouster in February 2011 of longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak.

Ex-spy chief Omar Suleiman and Muslim Brotherhood leader Khairat al-Shater were among those disqualified, together with ultraconservative Salafist lawyer Hazem Abu Ismail.

The elections are due to begin on May 23.

The electoral body said on April 14 that it had disqualified 10 of the 23 candidates who had applied to run in the election.

Those disqualified had 48 hours to appeal.

A final list of candidates will be published on April 26, when the election campaign officially begins.
