Georgia's government on July 31 issued a joint statement with China on the establishment of a "strategic partnership" between the two countries. According to the statement, issued as Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili was on an official visit to China, "Georgia decisively supports one China principle." Gharibashvili met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang during the visit. For years, Georgia has called Western countries its strategic partners, enshrining into the constitution its plans to join NATO and the European Union.
