TBILISI -- Georgian flags flew at half-staff as the nation marked the anniversary of the Red Army invasion in 1921, now officially known as as the Day of the Soviet Occupation.
Senior lawmakers laid a wreath at a monument to cadets who were killed fighting against the invasion, which began 70 years of Soviet control over Georgia.
An open-air exhibition called Forgetting is Guarantee of Recurrence, held on Tbilisi's main avenue, was among several commemorative events organized nationwide.
On February 17, 1921, Soviet Russia's Red Army entered Georgia and annexed it.
Georgian cadets fought against the annexation and were killed by Red Army forces on February 25 near Tbilisi.
In July 2010, two years after a five-day war poisoned already strained relations between Georgia and Russia, the Georgian parliament voted to mark February 25 each year as the Day of the Soviet Occupation.
