Iran says it agrees in principle to resume international talks on its controversial nuclear program later this month.

Details, including the time and place for such negotiations, would still have to be worked out.

Western countries have slapped Iran with punitive sanctions over its nuclear activities, which they suspect is aimed at pursuing nuclear weapons.

Iran insists its uranium-enrichment program is aimed only at civilian purposes, including energy.

The last round of talks between Tehran and six world powers -- the United States, Russia, France, Britain, Germany, and China -- ended in June in Moscow without any breakthrough.

In November, those six countries indicated they were willing to hold a new round of talks in Tehran.
