Iranian officials say they have brought under control an Internet virus that attacked computers at industrial sites in southern Iran.
The Iranian government unit tasked with fighting cyberattacks -- the Passive Defense Organization -- says the recent outbreak of the "Stuxnet computer worm" in Hormozgan Province was an apparent extension of a covert cyberwar that targeted the country's nuclear facilities in 2010.
Ali Akbar Akhavan, head of the Hormozgan branch of the cyberdefense unit, told the Iranian Student's News Agency on December 25 that the electricity producing Bandar Abbas Tavanir Company was among the firms hit by the virus in recent months.
Cyberattacks also have slowed Iran's Internet and attacked its offshore oil and gas platforms during 2012, as well as oil refineries, containers, and export facilities.
