Reports say at least 22 people were killed and more than 120 wounded on August 16 in a spate of attacks in Baghdad as well as northern and western Iraq.

One attack took place in a town near the former insurgent bastion of Fallujah west of Baghdad, which left three policemen dead.

Officials say that in the ethnically mixed northern city of Kirkuk, four car bombs exploded within 45 minutes, killing 12 policemen.

Bombs, planted in two cars, killed two civilians in the northern city of Mosul. Also in Mosul, two others were shot dead inside their car by unknown gunmen.

Three more civilians died when a car bomb exploded in the Shi'ite-dominated area of Hussainiya in the north of Baghdad. More than 100 people have been killed in violence across the country since the start of August.
