Iraqi police say a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden truck near a bank in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk today, killing at least two people and wounding around 60 others.

The attack occurred as people were queueing at the bank to collect salaries.

Kirkuk police spokesman Brigadier General Sarhat Qadir said police officers, bank employees, and other civilians were among the injured.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing.

The city of Kirkuk, located some 290 kilometers north of Baghdad, has for years seen ethnic tensions among Kurds, Sunni Arabs, and Turkomans who all claim rights to the oil-rich land.

Iraq's northern Kurdish region wants to incorporate Kirkuk Province into its three-province autonomous area, a move opposed by officials in Baghdad.
