Israel Agrees To Some Egyptian Troops In Sinai

Reports say Israel has agreed to let Egypt move hundreds more troops into the Sinai Peninsula, boosting the numbers agreed under the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace treaty.

The reports came as Egypt struggles to cope with an unprecedented wave of public anger and protests. Reports say the deployment of about 800 soldiers would be in an area around the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, some 200 kilometers, from Israel's border.

Under a 1979 peace treaty, Israel returned the captured Sinai to Egypt. In return, Egypt agreed to leave the area, which borders southern Israel, demilitarized.

The area is a favorite destination for foreign tourists and a major money-earner for the Egyptian economy.
