Kazakh Military Plane Crash Kills All On Board

Reports say all 27 people on board were killed when a military transport plane belonging to Kazakhstan's border troops crashed in the country's south on December 25.

The plane crashed near Shymkent, an administrative capital in southern Kazakhstan.

The National Security Committee confirmed the plane had seven crew members and 20 passengers on board.

It said the acting head of the country's border guards, Colonel Turganbek Stambekov, was aboard the plane.

An investigation has been launched.

An officer on duty at the border guards' service told RFE/RL that there appeared to be no survivors from the crash.

Stambekov was appointed head of the service in June after 14 border guards were killed in a remote outpost near China.

A 20-year-old conscript has been sentenced to life in prison for the killings.
