Kazakh Man Convicted For Promoting Armed Jihad, 16 Tried On Terror Charges

A court in Kazakhstan's central city of Qaraghandy has convicted a 27-year-old man of promoting armed jihad.

Dias Kugushev was sentenced on April 10 to five years in prison.

He was arrested last November after police said they found an illegal gun, ammunition, and extremist literature in his apartment.

Also on April 10, 16 men between 18 and 47 years of age went on trial in Kazakhstan’s western city of Atyrau on religious extremism and terrorism charges.

The defendants were arrested in February.

Atyrau and other cities and towns in western Kazakhstan have made headlines in recent months following security operations in the region targeting Islamic extremists and terrorists.

Last autumn, security forces and police killed nine suspected militants in two separate operations in Atyrau and the nearby town of Kulsary.
