Officials say at least 49 soldiers at a military unit in Kokshetau, in the far north of Kazakhstan, have been hospitalized since August 23 with a preliminary diagnosis showing that they have an acute respiratory infection. One patient had to be resuscitated and remains in intensive care. Doctors said COVID-19 has been ruled out and that the outbreak tearing through the army barracks could be a seasonal illness.
