Kazakhstan's Committee of National Security said on January 29 that Turkey over the weekend deported to Astana a 22-year-old Kazakh man suspected of joining an armed group in Syria. The suspect was born in Kazakhstan’s southern city of Turkistan and joined a military group in Syria in 2020, the committee said. No further details were given. In September last year, a 19-year-old in Kazakhstan’s southern city of Shymkent was handed a seven-year prison term on the same charge.
