A court in Bishkek has denied the transfer of former Kyrgyz parliament speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov from pretrial detention to house arrest.
The Birinchi Mai District Court also ruled on July 10 to postpone Keldibekov's trial to July 15 due to an undisclosed health condition.
A member of the opposition Ata-Jurt (Fatherland) party, Keldibekov, whose trial was scheduled to start on July 10, was arrested in November and charged with abuse of office and financial misdeeds while running the State Social Fund and Tax Service.
He also served as parliament speaker between 2010 and 2011.
Last month, Kyrgyz lawmakers adopted a resolution calling on the Supreme Court to transfer Keldibekov to house arrest, saying he urgently needed medical treatment abroad.
Keldibekov's supporters blocked a highway in southern Osh Province from May 27 to June 22, demanding Keldibekov's transfer to house arrest.
