U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has said the United States must not surrender to isolationist impulses as it faces economic difficulties at home and threats to the government budget.

In a speech at the University of Virginia on February 20, Kerry said automatic government spending cuts due to take effect next month highlight the need to make Americans aware of the economic benefits of global engagement.

The cuts are due to take effect on March 1 if Congress fails to act.

The State Department has said they would jeopardize $2.6 billion in aid, security assistance, and other international programs.

Kerry said the cuts would damage the credibility of U.S. diplomacy.

He also said that the cuts were no excuse to fail to act on pending global issues, such as reducing the nuclear threat and addressing climate change.
