Kosovo Liaison To Serbia Resigns, Two Days After Assuming The Post

Kosovo's liaison officer to Serbia has resigned, just two days after he took the job.

Lulzim Peci resigned on June 19 after saying in an interview that Kosovo and Serbia could only have normal relations after Serbia recognizes Kosovo’s independence.

Kosovo’s Foreign Ministry said Peci had exceeded his powers as a diplomat.

Serbia refuses to recognize the independence of its former southern province, but the two sides have been avoiding directly addressing the issue in a bid to move toward greater integration with the European Union.

The liaison officer job is intended to help Kosovo and Serbia implement an EU-brokered normalization accord that was agreed on in April.

EU leaders are expected to decide by June 28 whether enough reconciliation progress has been made so that Serbia can start EU accession negotiations.

Based on reporting by Reuters and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
