Kyrgyz Detain Four Uzbeks For Illegal Border Crossing

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz border guards have detained four Uzbek nationals accused of crossing the border illegally.

Kyrgyzstan's Border Guard Service says the Uzbeks were caught while crossing the border in the country's southern Kadamjai district on February 2.

They did not have any identification documents and are currently held in Kadamjai District police, the statement says.

On February 1, Kyrgyz border guards detained two other Uzbek citizens while illegally crossing border in Aksy district in Jalal-Abad province.

Many parts of the borders between the five Central Asian countries have remained in dispute since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In recent months, the tension along Kyrgyz-Uzbek and Kyrgyz-Tajik borders have intensified after outbreaks of violence involving residents and border guards from all sides.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
