-- The United States Army's elite Delta Force is on the verge of beginning operations to target, capture or kill top IS operatives in Iraq, after several weeks of covert preparation, an administration official with direct knowledge of the force's activities told CNN.

-- Syrian government forces have regained control of a road used by the army to access Aleppo, after making advances against Islamic State fighters, a monitoring group and state television reported.


-- Authorities in Iraq say the death toll from a double bombing at a market in Baghdad’s Shi’ite neighborhood of Sadr City rose to 73 on February 29 after several critically wounded victims died overnight.

-- Tajik media are reporting that a woman known to be the second wife of Gulmurod Halimov, the fugitive Tajik colonel who defected to the IS group, has left for Syria along with the couple's four young children.

-- The UN is poised to begin delivering aid to people living in besieged areas of Syria, making use of a truce brokered by the United States and Russia. The first deliveries are planned for Feb. 29, with aid due to reach about 150,000 Syrians in besieged areas over the next five days.

U.S. air strikes hit IS radio station in Afghanistan: BBC

U.S. air strikes have hit and destroyed a radio station used by the IS group in eastern Afghanistan, U.S. and Afghan officials say, according to the BBC.

The drone strikes hit the IS-operated "Voice of the Caliphate" FM radio station on Feb. 1 in Nangarhar's remote Achin district.

No, Syria talks haven't properly begun, government says

The Syrian government has rejected reports that the Syrian peace talks have properly begun, AFP reports. Instead, the head of the Syrian government delegation, Bashar al-Jaafari, said that the negotiations were in a "preparatory phase" and the opposition was "not serious."

"We still don't know who the opposition delegation is," al-Jaafari told reporters after a meeting with UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura.

The main Syrian opposition delegation to the Syria peace talks in Geneva has said that the international community needs to intervene to stop Russian air strikes in Syria.

Russia's air strikes have helped the Syrian government make gains against rebels in various parts of Syria, although Russia has said that it is targeting the IS group and Al-Qaeda. Opposition groups say that the Russian strikes have caused high civilian casualties.

The deadly cost of speaking out against IS

Sobering analysis from The Soufan Group in the wake of the January 31 murder of Yemeni cleric Samahan Abdel-Aziz in Aden, two days after he delivered a speech denouncing the IS group and Al-Qaeda.
