A methane gas explosion in a coal mine in southwestern Pakistan on January 19 killed three miners, officials said. The miners were digging inside a coal mine in the Dukki region some 200 kilometers from Balochistan’s capital, Quetta, when the explosion took place. Two of the dead coalminers were brothers who were Afghan nationals while the third was Pakistani. Precarious safety conditions and a lack of proper training for mine workers have caused numerous accidents in Pakistan's mines, mostly in mineral-rich Balochistan Province.
