Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region on January 17 announced trade duties for Moldovan farmers after Chisinau earlier this month introduced import and export duties for the Moscow-backed separatist region. The move came after Moldovan Reintegration Minister Oleg Serebrean told separatist leader Vadim Krasnoselsky at a meeting on January 16 in Tiraspol that Chisinau would not scrap the duties. Moldova says Transdniester is "illegally taxing" Moldovan farmers. The status of Transdniester, which declared independence from Moldova in 1990, has come under the spotlight again after the European Union in 2022 invited Moldova's pro-Western government to launch accession talks.
