NATO says it is planning constantly manned facilities in NATO-member countries that are east of what formerly was the iron curtain.
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in an interview published on August 26 in Britain's "The Guardian" newspaper that plans call for "a more visible NATO presence in the East."
Rasmussen said NATO forces other than those from the NATO-member host countries would be rotated at "very high frequency" so that "any potential aggressor" would know an attack would target the entire NATO alliance.
He said the initiative would include positioning supplies to boost NATO's rapid reaction capabilities.
Poland and the three Baltic states -- all NATO members -- have called for a stronger NATO presence after Russia's intervention in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea.
NATO currently maintains a headquarters at Szczecin, near Poland's Baltic coast
