Seven people were shot dead on September 28 in Pakistan’s southwestern region of Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran and is home to the country’s Baluch ethnic minority. Officials said the victims were laborers from Punjab Province. Poverty-ridden Balochistan has been the scene of a low-level insurgency and brutal army crackdown for years, which has led to massive street protests in the region. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. A radical group known as the Baloch Liberation Army has waged an insurgency for decades against the Pakistani state, carrying out mostly small-scale attacks against government forces and others from outside the region, often targeting the Punjabi community.
