Election officials in Pakistan say the country’s former military ruler, Pervez Musharraf, is allowed to run for parliament in general elections in May.

Officials in the far northern town of Chitral on April 7 approved Musharraf’s candidacy after the authorities in Karachi and other cities rejected his application.

Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan for nearly 10 years after toppling the country’s civilian government in a 1999 coup, returned to Pakistan last month after nearly four years in self-imposed exile.

He faces a number of legal challenges at home, including a possible treason case that carries a death sentence.

He has been granted bail over cases related to the 2007 killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and a Balochi rebel leader in 2006 and for firing and arresting judges in November 2007.
