Pakistani Gunmen Seriously Wound Senior Policeman

Gunmen have seriously wounded a senior police officer and killed his guard and driver in northwestern Pakistan.

Police and hospital officials said on July 25 that assailants attacked Gul Wali Khan's vehicle while he was going to his office in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Khan is the deputy commander of the Frontier Reserve Police.

A local hospital official said that Khan was in critical condition with three bullet wounds.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban.

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, borders the country's semiautonomous tribal areas.

The region has been the main sanctuary for Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in Pakistan.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the country's decade-long insurgency.
