At Least 9 Soldiers Killed In South Waziristan Attack

DERA ISMAIL KHAN -- At least nine Pakistani soldiers have been reported killed in an attack by Taliban militants in remote western tribal region on Afghanistan's border.

Fighting erupted early on August 29 between Pakistani security forces and Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan fighters in the mountainous Badar area of South Waziristan.

Other reports suggest Taliban fighters attacked an army post.

Security officials said at least nine Pakistani soldiers were killed, while at least eight Taliban fighters were killed and another 10 injured.

A Taliban spokesman said the militants had killed 12 soldiers.

South Waziristan was the scene of a massive antimilitant operation by the government in 2009, and the military's control over the region is reported to remain tenuous.
