Poland says it will host a fund-raising conference next week to aid the Belarus opposition movements following a crackdown on antigovernment demonstrations protesting President Alyaksandr Lukashenka's reelection last month.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the February 2 conference would include representatives from all 27 European Union members, EU candidate states, and the United States.

Earlier, a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton told RFE/RL that the bloc was preparing to impose a far wider travel ban on Belarusian officials than it took following the country's 2006 elections.

The EU imposed visa bans on Lukashenka and some 40 other officials in 2006, but lifted them two years later.

The EU move is expected at a foreign ministers meeting on January 31.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
