World Powers Want New Iran Nuclear Talks 'As Soon As Possible'

BRUSSELS --Six world powers are committed to holding a new round of nuclear negotiations with Iran as soon as possible, says a spokesman for the European Union's foreign-policy chief, who represents the six in talks with Iran.

Officials from the six countries -- China, Russia, the United States, Britain, France, and Germany -- met in Brussels on November 21 to plan for future contact with Iran aimed at halting the country’s sensitive nuclear work.

"The idea of course is that we want Iran to really engage in the proposals we have made and guarantee and persuade the international community that the Iranian nuclear program is purely for peaceful means," the spokesman told RFE/RL.

At the previous round in Moscow in June, both sides failed to overcome their differences on who should take which steps first in order to end the nuclear stand-off.
