CHISINAU -- Moldova’s parliament has voted down the government proposed by pro-European acting Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, more than two months after parliamentary elections.
Leanca's government received 42 votes on February 12 from the minority coalition of the Liberal Democrat Party and Democrat Party, while 51 votes were needed for approval.
His proposed cabinet failed to win support from the Communists and his former allies, the Liberal Party, which was kicked out of coalition negotiations at the end of January.
Leanca said the vote "raises questions about the functionality" of a landmark economic and political accord Moldova signed with the European Union in June.
Leanca was appointed prime minister in 2013 after serving as foreign minister since 2009.
He became acting prime minister after the November 30 elections.
President Nicolae Timofti must now nominate a new candidate to try and form a government.
