A roadside bomb targeting a vehicle carrying Pakistani construction workers killed five laborers and wounded two soldiers who were escorting them in a remote area in the southwestern Baluchistan Province on March 5, according to a government official.

Zahid Shah, a deputy commissioner in the district of Sibi where the bombing occurred, said authorities were investigating the attack that hasn't been claimed by any group so far.

Troops often escort workers in volatile southwestern Pakistan for security reasons.

Baluchistan, which is rich in gas and minerals, has been the scene of a low-level insurgency by armed groups such as the Baluchistan Liberation Front and the Baluchistan Liberation Army, which are demanding more autonomy and a greater share in the region’s resources.

Islamist militants also operate in the region.
