Ingush Protesters Denounce Land Swap With Chechnya
- By Reuters
People gathered in the regional capital of Ingushetia for a third straight day on October 6 to protest what they say is an unfair land swap with Chechnya under a controversial deal to establish the border between the two North Caucasus republics. Hundreds of people remained overnight in a square in the regional capital, Magas, some sleeping in tents, according to local media. Activists have also set up a field kitchen, where local residents brought food to support the demonstrators. The size of the protest has been a source of some disagreement, with estimated figures ranging from a few hundred to several thousand people. The crowd is being watched by riot police, but there have not yet been any reports of clashes.
