A suicide bomber has attacked a provincial governor's compound in northern Afghanistan's Takhar Province, killing at least eight people.

Faiz Mohammed Tawhidi, spokesman for the Takhar provincial governor, said three German soldiers and four Afghans -- including regional police chief General Mohammed Daoud Daoud -- were among the dead.

At least 10 other people were said to have been wounded in the blast.

Qutbuddin Kamal, a senior aide to Governor Abdul Jabar Taqwa, said Taqwa was among the wounded.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed that it had troops among the casualties.

An unspecified Taliban spokesman contacted French AFP news agency to claim responsibility for the attack.
