Taliban suicide bombers killed at least 22 people in an audacious attack on a governor's compound in central Afghanistan on August 14 as officials met to discuss security issues, the Afghan interior ministry has said.

Those killed in the attack on the compound of Parwan governor Abdul Basir Salangi included 16 government workers and six police officers.

Another 34 were reported wounded. The Afghan interior ministry said six suicide bombers had attacked the compound along with a gunman.

One bomber reportedly blew himself up at the compound gate, allowing the others to gain entry.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility.

Parwan lies about hour's drive northwest of the capital, Kabul.

Witnesses reported hearing at least five large explosions and bursts of gunfire moments after the attack.

Insurgents, often from the Taliban, have launched a series of attacks against government targets over the past year, often in the east of the country near the porous border with Pakistan's largely lawless tribal lands.
