Israel Accuses Syrian Forces Of Using Chemical Weapons

An Israel general is accusing the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of using chemical weapons in the country's two-year-old civil war.

Brigadier General Itai Brun told a military conference on April 23 that Israel believed Syria used the weapons "on a number of occasions in the past few months."

Brun showed photographs of alleged victims of chemical attacks that showed constricted pupils and foaming mouths, leading analysts to believe sarin gas was used.

It was not clear when or where the photographs were taken or how Israel obtained them.

Earlier this month, "The Times" of London newspaper reported that British analysts also have evidence that chemical weapons have been used in Syria.

They were, however, unable to determine whether the weapons had been used by pro-government forces, rebel forces, or both.

Based on reporting by Reuters and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
