Syria Accuses U.S. Of Inciting Violence

Updated

Syria has accused the United States of inciting violence against its security forces and said it will confront what it describes as attempts to interfere in its domestic affairs.

A Foreign Ministry statement said comments by U.S. officials were "striking proof that the United States encourages armed groups to commit violence against the Syrian Arab army."

The statement comes as supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reportedly threw stones and tomatoes at U.S. ambassador Robert Ford, who was visiting opposition figure Hassan Abdelazim in Damascus.

The diplomat was reportedly blocked inside a building for two hours before security forces arrived and he could return safely to the U.S. Embassy.

In July, Assad supporters attacked the U.S. Embassy compound in Damascus.
