Activists say Syrian troops bombarded a town in the central province of Homs with artillery today, causing several casualities in a continuing crackdown against protesters.
Shells were reportedly fired on the town of Tabliseh, and snipers were deployed on the roofs of mosques.
Syrian troops, backed by tanks, have been conducting operations in Tabliseh and the nearby town of Rastan since May 29, and activists said 11 people were killed in the two towns. Syria's state-run news agency said four soldiers were killed in the operation in Tabliseh.
Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights, said today the brutality and magnitude of repression in Syria against antigovernment groups is "shocking."
Rights groups say more than 1,000 people have been killed and 10,000 arrested since the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad's regime began in mid-March.
Syrian authorities say 143 soldiers, security forces, and police have been killed.
