Speaker Of Ukrainian Parliament Congratulates Trump

The speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk told RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service:

“Ukraine congratulates the people of the United States of America and President Donald Trump on the inauguration. His speech demonstrated important intentions: to be a peacemaker and unifier. President Trump's words about his desire to end wars and prevent new ones became especially important for us.

His approach to achieving peace through strength and determination has significance for Ukraine, which is fighting for its freedom and sovereignty in the face of aggression. As President Trump said, 'our power will end all wars and bring a new spirit of unity to a world that has been filled with violence and unpredictability.'"

'His Worldview Does Not Differ From Putin's Worldview'

Former Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. Oleh Shamshur told RFE/RL Ukrainian Service:

“I haven't heard anything that would make me more optimistic about our expectations. The speech does not give grounds for reducing pessimism.

"The passages about the Panama Canal and Greenland are formally unrelated to Ukraine, but in the context of plans to end the war, they are alarming. There are some rules of the game for big countries, for weaker ones, which must consider the interests of the big ones. His worldview practically does not differ from Putin's worldview -- this is alarming, especially in view of a possible meeting.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcomed President Trump in a short Facebook post.

"We expect peace, calm, and economic prosperity from the Trump presidency. The world is going to change and this will be good for Hungarians."

Orban, the first European leader to support Trump in 2016, did not attend the inauguration ceremony. One of his aides told news site index.hu that Orban, who visited the new U.S. president at his Mar-a-Lago residence twice in 2024, wanted to meet with Trump in Washington "when he is able to hold talks about relations between the two countries".
