Turkish officials say that a fighter jet that went missing near the border with Syria has crashed.
Celalettin Cerrah, governor for Osmaniye province, said late on May 13 that search teams had located the F-16’s fuselage in a mountainous area of the province, which lies some 50 kilometers from the border with Syria.
He said rescue teams were still searching for the pilot, who radioed earlier in that day that he was ejecting before contact was lost.
The jet had taken off from a base in northern Amasya Province.
It is not known why the plane went down.
In June 2012, Syria shot down a Turkish F-4 reconnaissance jet off the Syrian coast.
In that case, Damascus said it acted in self-defense without knowing that the jet was Turkish, but Ankara said the plane was identifiable and in international airspace.
