Two Reported Killed In Northern Pakistani City Amid Sectarian Violence

ISLAMABAD -- Reports from northwestern Pakistan say at least two people were killed and more than a dozen injured when a hand grenade was thrown during a rally in the city of Gilgit.

The unauthorized rally took place on April 3, even though authorities had imposed a curfew on the city following days of sectarian clashes between local Sunni and Shi’ite communities.

The unrest has intensified since Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik last week agreed to changes in Islamic studies that had been called for by the Shi’ite community.

The Sunnis have since been demonstrating to push through a similar demand for changes in the studies.
