The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has begun exporting its crude oil from a pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway located at the entrance of the Persian Gulf, which Iran has threatened to shut.

Emirati officials said the first crude was exported to Pakistan on July 15, after six months of testing the pipeline.

The 360-kilometre pipeline extends from the capital, Abu Dhabi, to the port of Fujairah on the eastern side of the UAE.

Officials expect its capacity to increase to 1.8 million barrels per day, representing some 70 per cent of the country's oil production.
