Ukrainian activists hold placards during their rally in front of the presidential office in Kyiv, demanding the resignation of Prosecutor-General Viktor Shokin.

Dozens of activists gathered in central Kyiv have demanded an immediate dismissal of Ukraine's embattled Prosecutor-General Viktor Shokin.

Local media said some 200 protesters attended the rally on March 28 against Shokin, who is seen by his critics as an obstacle to tackling Ukraine's endemic corruption.

They demanded that President Petro Poroshenko replace Shokin with a reform-minded prosecutor.

Shokin holds his post despite having formally resigned in February on Poroshenko's insistence.

His resignation needs parliamentary approval and lawmakers are expected to vote on the issue on March 29.

Calls for Shokin's resignation mounted after Deputy Prosecutor-General Vitaliy Kasko resigned on February 15, accusing Shokin of hindering corruption investigations.

He accused the Office of the Prosecutor-General of being a "hotbed of corruption."Shokin's office dismissed the claim as a publicity stunt.

Shokin was appointed prosecutor-general in February 2015.
