Obama Calls For European Unity, NATO Defense, Continued Sanctions On Russia
U.S. President Barack Obama has made an impassioned plea for European unity while visiting the German city of Hannover on April 25.
Speaking at an industrial technology trade fair in Hannover, Obama said “a strong and united Europe is a necessity for the world.”
Obama also called on every member nation of NATO to contribute its full share to the military alliance, saying that Europe has sometimes “been complacent” about its own defense.
He said he will insist at a July NATO summit in Warsaw that all members of the alliance must take responsibility for security.
Obama also called on European leaders to keep sanctions in place in Russia over its role in the conflict in Ukraine until Moscow implements its obligations under the Minsk agreement.
