According to an indictment read by the Ukrainian prosecution, Russians Aleksandr Aleksandrov and Yevgeny Yerofeyev “committed a terrorist attack against the Ukrainian military.”

“On May 16, 2015 close to Shchastya, Luhansk Oblast, Yerofeyev and Aleksandrov, along with other unidentified military men of the Russian Armed Forces, for the purpose of provocation, committed a terrorist act against the 92nd Motor Rifle Divisions and the SBU staff that were providing security,” the indictment reads.

The trial of the two men started today.

In a video published in May, Aleksandrov and Yerofeyev said they were on active duty with the Russian military in eastern Ukraine when they were captured on May 16.

Ukrainian deputies adopted the first draft law of the so-called visa-free laws package, required by the EU to lift the visa regime with Ukraine. The adopted draft law is one of six on the deputies’ agenda today.

The draft law No. 3154 requires the court’s immediate consideration of claims about forced expulsion or detention of foreigners and stateless people. The draft received 310 votes in the first reading.

The law will closely follow international agreements on readmission.

According to current Ukrainian law, such persons may be detained for up to three days until the court’s decision. However, as human rights organizations claim, in practice they may be detained for several months.

More from our news desk on the trial of two Russians in Ukraine:

Two Russian citizens detained by government forces in eastern Ukraine and alleged to be members of Russia's armed forces have gone on trial in Kyiv.

Kyiv's Holosiiv District Court on November 10 began hearing charges read out by prosecutors against Aleksandr Aleksandrov and Yevgeny Yerofeyev.

The pair has been charged with terrorism and participation on military activities against Ukraine.

Aleksandrov and Yerofeyev, who were captured in Ukraine's east on May 16, deny the charges.

In a video published days after their capture, Aleksandrov and Yerofeyev said they were on active duty with the Russian military in eastern Ukraine when they were captured.

Moscow says Yerofeyev and Aleksandrov were no longer employed by the state when they were captured.

Russia denies accusations by Kyiv and the West that it is providing weapons, training, and personnel to support pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine who are fighting government forces in a conflict that has killed more than 7,900 people since April 2014.
