Australia has held a memorial service to mark the first anniversary of the MH17 air disaster over Ukraine, in which 298 people, including 38 Australians and residents, died.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott unveiled a plaque with the names of the Australian victims in the gardens of Parliament House in Canberra on July 17.
The plaque sits on top of soil taken from the area where the plane came down.
The Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it crashed in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region on July 17, 2014.
Investigators, led by the Dutch, believe evidence points to a Russian missile fired by Russian-backed rebels as the likely culprits. Russia and the separatists deny any responsibility.
Memorial ceremonies will also be held in Ukraine and the Netherlands on July 17.
