A UN committee has ordered global sanctions to be imposed on the militant Haqqani network, which operates in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Taliban sanctions committee ordered all 193 UN member states on November 5 to freeze the assets and institute an arms embargo against the radical, Al-Qaeda-linked group.
The committee ordered the same sanctions and a travel ban against Afghan-born Abdul Rauf Zakir, also known as Qari Zakir.
It charged that he oversees the Haqqani network's training of suicide bombers and provided instructions on bomb building.
The U.S. State Department earlier the same day announced a freeze on Zakir's assets and blocked all financial transactions with him.
It released a statement blaming Zakir for attacks on international forces in Afghanistan.
