U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has called on China to end "outright theft" through hacking.

Speaking after opening two-day annual talks between the two giants, Biden said that both countries will "benefit from an open, secure, reliable Internet."

Washington accuses Beijing of waging a vast hacking campaign against U.S. government agencies and corporations.

A recent study said this theft was costing U.S. companies hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

China, however, claims to be a victim of hacking too.

Such accusations gained ammunition after when intelligence leaker Edward Snowden claimed that U.S. spies had tapped into the Asian power's Internet routing network.

Based on reporting by AFP and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
