U.S. Warns Iraq Over Suspected Iranian Arm Shipments To Syria

The United States has urged Iraq to ensure that Iranian planes flying over its territory face cargo inspections.

Acting State Department deputy spokesman Patrick Ventrell made the call on September 5 amid concerns Tehran is shipping arms to President Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria.

"All of this destructive assistance should stop, whether it's materiel, whether it's direct training and assistance to help stage manage the repression," Ventrell said.

On a visit to Baghdad, three U.S. senators -- Joe Lieberman, Lindsey Graham, and John McCain -- warned that Iraq risked damaging relations with the United States if it allowed Iran to use its airspace to deliver weapons to Syria.

Speaking to reporters, Lieberman called into question the Strategic Framework Agreement -- a long-term partnership Iraq and the United States agreed to in 2008.

"The New York Times" reported that Iran has resumed equipment shipments to the Syrian regime.
