The practice of appointing relatives to influential state positions is common in authoritarian Central Asian nations. In Turkmenistan, President Serdar Berdymukhammedov succeeded his father, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov. In Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon's eldest son, Rustam Emomali, holds key positions, including chairman of the parliament's upper chamber and mayor of Dushanbe.
