Uzbek Prosecutors To Investigate Death Of Detained Man After Family Accuses Police Of Torture

The Uzbek capital's Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the death of a 33-year-old man being detained at a Tashkent police station after his family said the body showed signs of torture. The unnamed man, who was being held on suspicion of offenses including involvement in organized criminal groups, abduction, and extortion, collapsed on August 12 while undergoing police questioning, officials said on August 14. A preliminary diagnosis attributed the cause of death to liver cirrhosis and cardiovascular defect, but the family disputes the report.
